Corsets remain a point of cultural contention in contemporary discourse. They are widely understood as uncomfortable instruments used to contort women’s bodies to fit a prevailing standard of beauty. This idea, however, captures only part of the reality. Although corsets were historically worn to achieve certain proportions, they were not the torture mechanisms they are believed to be today. While the corset itself may not be harmful to those who don one, the societal expectations associated with them are. Beauty ideals have shifted significantly throughout history, often placing impossible demands on women, particularly women of color. This visual series illustrates the struggle women experience as they interact with these beauty expectations–and hopeful escape from them upon unsubscribing. Enter: Eleutheromania.
